Do these smart home devices work together?

Usually yes — if they share a standard. Matter is the industry-wide standard (backed by Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung) that lets devices from different brands work in the same home. Every pick on this list notes which ecosystems it supports; when in doubt, look for the Matter badge on the box.

Do I need a smart-home hub?

For most of this list, no. The thermostats, plugs, cameras, and speakers connect over Wi-Fi or Matter directly. Two exceptions: the Philips Hue kit needs its Hue Bridge (included in the starter kit), and the SwitchBot Blind Tilt needs a SwitchBot Hub (sold separately) for Matter, Apple Home, and voice control.

Do any of these require a subscription?

No product on this list requires a subscription to work. One caveat: the cameras — the Arlo Pro 5S and the Nest Doorbell — keep their smartest features (person and package detection history, cloud video storage) behind optional subscriptions (Arlo Secure and Nest Aware). Everything else works fully with no monthly fee.
