How We Rank

Most “top 10” lists are pay-for-placement in disguise. Here’s exactly how we research, compare, and rank products — so you can judge our work instead of taking it on faith.

The short version We research manufacturer specs, established buying guides, and real buyer feedback. We rank by who each product is best for, list honest cons on every pick, show exact manufacturer list prices, and never let commissions move a product up or down the list.

What we research

Every BuyRanked category goes through the same three sources before anything earns a rank:

How the rankings work

We don’t rank products 1–10 by “best” in the abstract. Each pick earns a “best for” label — best overall, best budget, best for beginners, and so on — because the right product depends on who you are. Alongside the ten ranked products, every category includes genuinely cheaper alternatives with an honest account of what you give up by spending less.

No sponsored rankings, ever

Brands can’t pay for placement, and affiliate commissions never influence order. You can verify this yourself: several of our ranked products have no affiliate link at all, and they stay ranked exactly where the research put them.

How we show prices

We show the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP) — the official list price — rather than sale prices that change weekly or rough estimates. Variant and subscription details are spelled out where they matter (sizes, cellular vs. GPS, annual memberships after the first year).

How we make money

BuyRanked is reader-supported. When you buy through links on our sites, we may earn an affiliate commission at no extra cost to you. It keeps the lights on; it never affects rankings. See our Affiliate Disclosure for the full details.

Category-specific methodology

Each vertical publishes its own version of this page with category-specific detail:

Corrections

We get things wrong sometimes — a spec changes, a price updates, a product gets discontinued. If you spot an error, tell us and we’ll fix it and note the correction.
