How We Rank Fitness Gear
Updated September 2026
The methodology
Ranked by research, not by sponsors.
We don’t lab-test every product ourselves — and we won’t pretend we do. Instead, we aggregate what’s knowable: manufacturer specs, expert buying guides, and thousands of owner reviews. Then we score, weight, and rank. Here’s exactly how.
Step 1: Build the candidate list
We start with the products that dominate expert roundups, owner forums, and best-seller lists in each category — rowers, adjustable dumbbells, power racks, treadmills, suspension trainers, kettlebells, benches, trackers, mats, and bands. Anything with a thin review history or a brand-new, unproven design gets flagged, not ranked.
Step 2: Verify the specs
We pull specifications directly from manufacturer pages: weight capacities, footprints, motor ratings, materials, and warranty terms. Marketing claims get attributed to their source — if the manufacturer says a mat lasts a lifetime, that’s the manufacturer’s claim, and the warranty behind it is what we actually score.
Step 3: Score what matters
Every product is scored on the same five dimensions, weighted by category:
- Build quality & durability (30%) — materials, weight capacity, warranty length, and long-term owner reports. A 1,000-lb-rated bench with a real track record beats a 300-lb-rated bench with nice photos.
- Value (25%) — what you get per dollar at manufacturer MSRP. A $379.99 rack with a 700 lb capacity can outscore a $900 rack with the same capacity.
- Owner satisfaction (20%) — aggregated review sentiment across retailers, weighted toward verified purchases and long-term updates.
- Expert consensus (15%) — where independent buying guides agree (and where they disagree, which we note).
- Practicality (10%) — footprint, noise, assembly effort, and whether it needs a subscription to be useful.
Step 4: Name the trade-offs
A ranking without downsides is an ad. Every product on our lists carries its cons in plain language: the iFIT subscription behind the treadmill’s best content, the floor space a rower demands, the weight limit on a budget treadmill, the break-in period on a premium mat. Budget boxes go further — they tell you exactly what you give up when you spend less.
What keeps it honest
- No sponsored placements. Brands can’t pay for a rank, a review, or a mention. Affiliate commissions are disclosed and never influence order.
- MSRP only. We show manufacturer MSRP — never estimated street prices, never guessed sale prices.
- Subscriptions disclosed. If a product’s best features sit behind a monthly fee, it’s in the specs, the price line, and the cons.
- Updates, not set-and-forget. Rankings are reviewed when specs change, prices move materially, or new long-term data arrives.
What we don’t do
- We don’t claim to have personally tested products we haven’t touched.
- We don’t rank products with no meaningful owner-review history.
- We don’t hide affiliate relationships — see our full disclosure.
