How We Rank Video Game Gear
Updated September 2026
The method
Research, scored. Not vibes.
Every product on our ranked lists goes through the same process: we verify the specs against manufacturer data, read expert buying guides, aggregate thousands of owner reviews, and score the result. Brands can’t pay for a rank — and we publish the method so you can check our work.
What we score
- Verified specs (30%). The hard numbers — sensor DPI and polling rates, headset drivers and battery systems, controller features, monitor refresh and response claims — checked against manufacturer data sheets, not marketing pages. Manufacturer claims are attributed as manufacturer claims.
- Expert consensus (25%). What established reviewers and buying guides agree on: where the product wins, where it loses, and how it compares to direct rivals.
- Owner feedback (25%). Aggregated ratings and long-term owner reports, weighted toward durability complaints (stick drift, hinge wear, battery fade) that only show up after months of use.
- Value at MSRP (20%). What the product delivers relative to its manufacturer list price. We rank against MSRP — not temporary sale prices — so a discounted flagship doesn’t outrank a fairly priced mid-tier pick on a sale-price fluke.
What earns points — and what loses them
- Compatibility honesty: products that work cleanly across platforms score well; platform-locked products with fine-print restrictions (Xbox-only variants, Switch 2–only controllers) get flagged in the writeup.
- Durability record: well-documented long-term failure modes cost points — a controller with a drift reputation doesn’t keep a #1 spot on specs alone.
- Software honesty: features that require companion apps, specific OS versions, or paid memberships are stated upfront; we don’t score features you can’t actually use.
- Budget relevance: when a cheaper alternative covers 80% of the experience, the flagship has to earn its premium — and the alternative gets its own budget box.
What we don’t do
- No sponsored placements. Rankings are never sold, and no brand sees them before publication.
- No fake testing. We don’t claim to have personally tested products we haven’t. Our scores come from published research, and we say so.
- No invented data. No made-up ratings, review counts, or capabilities. If we can’t verify it, it doesn’t go in the score.
- No pay-to-rank email. Brands can’t buy their way onto the list, into the trending section, or up the ranks.
Ranked lists vs. trending picks
Our ranked top 10 uses the full scoring method above. Our trending picks are different: they’re buzz-based — what’s blowing up right now, with an honest verdict on whether it’s worth it or hype. Long-term data is thin on brand-new products, and we say so in the writeup rather than pretending otherwise.
Update cadence
We revisit the top 10 at least once per season. Prices are refreshed to manufacturer MSRP, new releases are evaluated against the current list, and products that fall behind get moved down or off. Each page shows its last-updated date at the top.
